Live Speech Translation
In December 2025, Google added real-time speech-to-speech translation (beta) for Android with any pair of headphones — no special hardware required. Key characteristics:
- Near-real-time translation of spoken conversation

- Both sides of a conversation can hear translated audio through their respective headphones
- Initially available in the US, Mexico, and India; iOS and more countries rolling out in 2026
This feature runs through the Google Translate app on Android, not the Gemini app directly. It uses Gemini's multilingual understanding for translation quality plus Google's Chirp speech models for the speech processing pipeline.
Multilingual Conversation Support
A February 2026 update brought improved multilingual conversation support to Gemini itself. In a single Gemini conversation, you can mix languages — write in Hindi, receive a response in English, then switch to Japanese — and Gemini tracks context across all of it. Gemini understands and generates in multiple languages simultaneously without explicit mode switching.
Workspace — Meeting Captions
Google Workspace Enterprise includes AI-translated meeting captions in 65+ languages as a core feature (bundled since January 2025). In Google Meet, participants can enable real-time caption translation into their language — useful for multinational teams where meetings are conducted in a language not everyone is fluent in. The translation quality uses the same Gemini-powered engine.
