Translation

In December 2025, Google completed a major upgrade to Google Translate using Gemini as the underlying translation engine. The quality improvement β€” particularly for idioms, slang, culturally specific expressions, and nuanced meaning β€” represents the most significant advancement in Google Translate since the original neural machine translation overhaul in 2016.

What Changed with Gemini

Previous versions of Google Translate used dedicated neural machine translation (NMT) models optimised for speed and throughput but limited in contextual understanding. Gemini-powered translation understands meaning in context, not just word-for-word patterns:

  • Idioms and slang: Phrases like β€œit's raining cats and dogs” or regional colloquialisms are translated by meaning, not literally.
  • Tone and register: Formal vs informal language is preserved. A business email translates with appropriate formality in the target language.
  • Cultural nuance: Culturally specific references and expressions are handled with context-awareness rather than approximation.
  • Contextual follow-up: On mobile, new interactive options let you ask for contextual explanations or alternative phrasing for a translation.

Coverage spans 70+ languages and 2,000+ language pairs.

Live Speech Translation

In December 2025, Google added real-time speech-to-speech translation (beta) for Android with any pair of headphones β€” no special hardware required. Key characteristics:

  • Near-real-time translation of spoken conversation
  • Preserves speaker tone, emphasis, and cadence in the translated speech output
  • Both sides of a conversation can hear translated audio through their respective headphones
  • Initially available in the US, Mexico, and India; iOS and more countries rolling out in 2026

This feature runs through the Google Translate app on Android, not the Gemini app directly. It uses Gemini's multilingual understanding for translation quality plus Google's Chirp speech models for the speech processing pipeline.

Multilingual Conversation Support

A February 2026 update brought improved multilingual conversation support to Gemini itself. In a single Gemini conversation, you can mix languages β€” write in Hindi, receive a response in English, then switch to Japanese β€” and Gemini tracks context across all of it. Gemini understands and generates in multiple languages simultaneously without explicit mode switching.

Workspace β€” Meeting Captions

Google Workspace Enterprise includes AI-translated meeting captions in 65+ languages as a core feature (bundled since January 2025). In Google Meet, participants can enable real-time caption translation into their language β€” useful for multinational teams where meetings are conducted in a language not everyone is fluent in. The translation quality uses the same Gemini-powered engine.
