Gemini Deep Research
Deep Research is Gemini's autonomous multi-step research agent. You give it a topic or question; it formulates a research plan, searches the web iteratively, reads and synthesises content from 100+ sources, identifies gaps, and produces a structured multi-page report with citations — typically in 5 to 15 minutes for complex topics.
How It Works
Deep Research follows a transparent, reviewable process:
- Research plan: After you submit your query, Gemini drafts a research strategy — a list of sub-questions and source categories it intends to cover. You can review and edit this plan before it runs.
- Iterative search: The agent searches the web, reads web pages in full, identifies what it has learned and what gaps remain, then re-searches to fill those gaps. This loop repeats until coverage is sufficient.
- Synthesis: All gathered information is synthesised into a structured report with sections, headers, and inline citations linking back to original sources.
- Review: You receive the full report and can ask Gemini to expand specific sections, re-run the research with a tighter or broader scope, or export the report.
Workspace Integration
As of November 7, 2025, Deep Research gained the ability to read your personal and organisational data when generating reports — not just the open web. With the appropriate Connected Apps permissions enabled, Deep Research can:
- Scan your Gmail for relevant emails on a topic
- Search and read files in your Google Drive
- Review Google Chat conversations for context
This makes Deep Research significantly more powerful for internal use cases — competitive intelligence, project retrospectives, or synthesising months of scattered communication into a coherent summary.
Plan Limits
Free
Limited number of Deep Research runs per month, using the Gemini 2.5 Flash model. Sufficient for occasional research but not for regular heavy use.
Google AI Pro
Full access using Gemini 2.5 Pro or Gemini 3 Pro — the highest-capability models, which produce more thorough and accurate reports. Expanded query limits.
Enterprise
Full model access plus Workspace data integration — Gmail, Drive, and Chat can be included as research sources alongside the open web.
Developer API
A dedicated Deep Research agent became available via the Gemini API in February 2026, powered by Gemini 3 Pro. This version was specifically trained to reduce hallucinations during the iterative research process — a critical concern when an agent is autonomously reading and synthesising external sources. Developers can integrate Deep Research capabilities directly into their own applications via the API. Deep Research is also being integrated into Google Search, Google Finance, and NotebookLM.
What It's Best For
- Market research: Competitive landscape, pricing analysis, industry trends
- Literature reviews: Synthesising academic or technical sources on a topic
- Due diligence: Company research, technology evaluation, regulatory overview
- Technical deep dives: Understanding a new technology area, framework, or standards body
- Internal synthesis: (Enterprise) Summarising project history from emails, docs, and chat
