NotebookLM
NotebookLM is Google's source-grounded AI research assistant. Unlike a general-purpose chatbot, every response is anchored to the documents you upload β it will not speculate or hallucinate beyond your provided sources. This makes it exceptionally reliable for research synthesis, exam preparation, and meeting the standard of βdon't tell me what you know, tell me what my documents say.β
Source Grounding
The defining characteristic of NotebookLM is that it does not draw on general world knowledge. When you ask a question, it searches only within the sources you have uploaded to that specific Notebook. If the answer is not in your sources, it says so. Every response includes citations linking back to the exact passage in the original document.
Supported source types include PDFs, Google Docs, Google Slides, plain text files, web URLs (NotebookLM fetches and indexes the page content), YouTube video links (it uses the transcript), and audio files.
Key Features
Audio Overviews
NotebookLM's most distinctive feature. It converts your uploaded sources into a natural-sounding conversational podcast between two AI hosts β summarising key themes, making connections, and discussing nuances as if the hosts had read the material. Since December 2024, an interactive mode lets you join the conversation in real time β ask questions and the AI hosts respond within the podcast format.
Study Guide & FAQ Generation
One-click generation of structured study guides, FAQ documents, and practice quiz questions derived entirely from your sources. Useful for students, onboarding materials, or knowledge base documentation.
Infographics & Slide Decks
Added in November 2025. NotebookLM can visualise source material as an infographic or generate a presentation slide deck from your documents β useful for converting research into shareable deliverables.
Deep Research Integration
You can pipe a Gemini Deep Research report β including all its source references β directly into a NotebookLM Notebook. This combines the breadth of autonomous web research with the precision of source-grounded synthesis.
Pricing
NotebookLM is free for all Google account holders with standard limits on the number of sources per Notebook and queries per day. NotebookLM Plus β with higher source limits, more Audio Overviews, and greater query allowances β is included with:
- Google AI Pro subscription (personal)
- Google Workspace Business and Enterprise (as a core service since February 2025)
NotebookLM runs on Gemini 2.0/2.5 under the hood, bringing the latest model capabilities to source-grounded tasks.
Practical Use Cases
- Academic research: Upload papers, ask NotebookLM to find contradictions, generate a literature review outline, or explain a specific methodology in plain English.
- Meeting preparation: Upload briefing documents and get a summary of key points and likely questions before a client meeting.
- Learning from a textbook: Generate an Audio Overview podcast of a chapter β listen during a commute, then ask follow-up questions in interactive mode.
- Internal documentation: Upload a company wiki or product spec and use NotebookLM as a source-grounded Q&A interface for onboarding new team members.
