Featured & Built-in GPTs

Not every GPT use case requires you to build one yourself. OpenAI publishes its own official GPTs, and the GPT Store features curated collections of high-quality community-built GPTs. Knowing what is already available saves you time and often provides a better starting point than a blank configuration.

OpenAI-Published GPTs

OpenAI maintains a set of official GPTs that enable specific tool use or domain focus. These are verified, maintained by OpenAI, and optimised for their stated purpose:

DALL-E

Image generation focused interface. Guides you through effective prompting for visual outputs, with iterative refinement built into the conversation flow.

Data Analyst

Upload spreadsheets and data files. The Data Analyst GPT runs Python code to analyse, visualise, and summarise your data. No coding required from you.

Writing Coach

Focused on improving your writing with structured feedback on clarity, tone, and structure. Gives editorial guidance rather than just rewriting for you.

Web Browser

A GPT configured for research with active web browsing. Searches, reads, and synthesises current information from the web in a focused research mode.

Code Interpreter

Runs Python code in a sandbox for calculations, data processing, file manipulation, and chart generation. The analyst's tool for working with structured data.

GPT Store Categories

The GPT Store at chatgpt.com/gpts organises community-built GPTs into browsable categories:

  • Writing: Essay assistants, creative writing, editing, email drafting
  • Productivity: Task management, meeting summaries, planning assistants
  • Research & Analysis: Literature review tools, fact-checking, citation assistants
  • Programming: Language-specific coding assistants, code review, debugging
  • Education: Subject tutors, language learning, exam preparation
  • Lifestyle: Fitness, cooking, travel planning, personal advice

How to Access GPTs

There are two ways to access the GPT Store:

  1. In ChatGPT on web or mobile: click Explore GPTs in the left sidebar
  2. Navigate directly to chatgpt.com/gpts in any browser

From there you can browse categories, search by keyword, or look for the "Editor's Picks" section which OpenAI curates and refreshes regularly.

Availability

All users — including Free plan — can explore the GPT Store and use GPTs published there. The Free tier's message limits apply to conversations with Store GPTs just as they do to regular ChatGPT. You do not need a paid subscription to use existing GPTs, only to create and publish your own.

When to Use a Featured GPT vs Build Your Own

Use an existing GPT when:

  • The use case is well-defined and general (data analysis, writing feedback, coding)
  • You want to start using it immediately without configuration
  • A verified OpenAI GPT directly serves your need
  • You want to explore what is possible before committing to a custom build

Build your own GPT when:

  • You need domain-specific knowledge files not available publicly
  • You need custom instructions tailored to your workflow or brand voice
  • You need Actions connected to your internal APIs or private data sources
  • You want a consistent experience across a team without manual re-prompting

Checklist

  • What does the Data Analyst GPT enable that you could not do as easily in standard ChatGPT?
  • Where can you access the GPT Store — name two paths?
  • Which plans allow a user to publish a GPT to the Store?
  • What are the six main categories in the GPT Store?
  • Name a scenario where using an existing GPT makes more sense than building a Custom GPT.
