Grok on X

Grok is embedded directly into X (formerly Twitter) — accessible from the sidebar or the compose box. It's the AI layer for the X platform, giving X Premium subscribers access to Grok's capabilities without needing an API account.

Access Tiers on X

X PlanGrok AccessLimits
Free (no subscription)Limited Grok accessVery restricted — a few queries/day for trial
X Basic (~$3/month)Basic Grok chatLimited messages per month
X Premium (~$8/month)Full Grok chat + Aurora imagesHigher monthly limits on chat and image generation
X Premium+ (~$16/month)Priority Grok access + all featuresHighest limits, early access to new models

Grok's most distinctive feature on X is live search — it can access what is being posted on X right now. This means you can ask Grok questions that would stump other models:

  • "What are people saying about the GPT-5 release?"
  • "Summarize the reaction to today's Fed announcement on X"
  • "What are the top AI posts from the last 24 hours?"
  • "Find me threads about [company] from verified accounts this week"

Grok cites the specific X posts it used to generate the answer, so you can verify the sources. This makes it genuinely useful for tracking fast-moving topics — product launches, market events, sports results, breaking news — where other models are limited to their training cutoff.

Aurora — Image Generation

Aurora is xAI's image generation model, accessible via Grok on X. It produces photorealistic images from text prompts. Key points:

  • Available to X Premium and Premium+ subscribers
  • Accessed via the Grok chat interface — type a description and Grok uses Aurora to generate the image
  • Known for photorealistic quality, particularly for portraits and product imagery
  • Not available via the xAI API as of May 2026 — Aurora is X-exclusive
  • Content policies are notably more permissive than DALL-E 3 or Imagen — relevant to be aware of

Grok in the Feed

Beyond the dedicated Grok chat interface, Grok is embedded throughout X:

Post summarization
Tap the Grok icon on any long thread or article shared on X — Grok summarizes the key points without you having to read the whole thing.
Trending topic explanations
When a topic is trending, X shows a Grok-generated explanation of why it's trending and what the conversation is about.
Reply drafting
In the compose box, Grok can draft a reply to a tweet in your voice based on a brief description of what you want to say.
Profile insights
Ask Grok about a specific user's recent activity — 'What has @username been posting about this week?' — and Grok synthesizes their posts.

Grok on X vs Standalone AI Apps

The key difference between using Grok on X versus opening ChatGPT or Claude is context. Grok on X knows what you're looking at, what's trending, and what your network is discussing. Other AI apps start from a blank slate. For research tied to social media — competitive intelligence, trend spotting, brand monitoring — this is a meaningful advantage. For general-purpose tasks like writing or coding, the other frontier models remain stronger.

Checklist: Do You Understand This?

  • Do you know which X plan is required for full Grok access including Aurora?
  • Can you describe a use case where Grok's real-time X search gives a meaningful advantage over ChatGPT?
  • Do you understand that Aurora is currently X-only and not available via the xAI API?
  • Can you name three ways Grok is embedded in the X feed beyond the dedicated chat interface?
