Perplexity AI Overview

Perplexity AI is an AI-powered answer engine founded in 2022 by former OpenAI and DeepMind researchers. Unlike traditional search engines that return links, Perplexity reads the web in real time and synthesises answers with cited sources. By mid-2026, it has over 100 million monthly active users and processes hundreds of millions of queries per day.

Core Product: The Answer Engine

Perplexity's primary interface is conversational: type a question, receive a direct answer drawn from web sources, with numbered citations linking to the original pages. Unlike ChatGPT (which answers from training data), Perplexity always retrieves live web content before answering - every answer is current and verifiable.

Real-time

Web retrieval on every query - not training data

Cited

Every factual claim linked to source

Conversational

Follow-up questions refine the same search

How It Works

For each query, Perplexity:

  1. Rewrites the user's question into optimal search queries
  2. Retrieves results from Bing, its own crawl index, and specialised sources (academic, news, YouTube)
  3. Ranks and selects the most relevant sources
  4. Passes the source content to a frontier LLM (Claude, GPT-4o, or Perplexity's own Sonar models)
  5. Returns a synthesised answer with inline citations
